Post 16 Curriculum
Kesgrave students are encouraged to select four subjects from our range of Level 3 A Level options. We also offer Level 3 BTECs, which have a stronger vocational component. These qualifications are assessed through coursework and examinations. This will enable students to study a broader curriculum, whilst retaining the specialist knowledge and understanding which characterises the Level 3 qualifications.
Our entry policy is designed to be flexible and accommodating to all students. It will, however, specify grades to be achieved for entry.
6 GCSE/BTEC passes at Level 4 or above are required. In addition, we recognise the importance of Maths and English Language GCSE, and would expect a 4 or above in at least one of these subjects.
Please note that if you would like to study English or Maths at A-Level you would require a Level 5 or above in these subjects at GCSE.
A-Level Chemistry and Physics would also need a Level 5 in Maths for entry. A-Level Biology would also need a Level 4 in Maths for entry.
Anyone wishing to study Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Maths at A-Level would also need to have sat the higher paper at GCSE.
Our experience shows that students taking these subjects will be successful only if they begin them with a very secure understanding of the subject matter.
(Please note, English Language and Literature, Additional and applied Science each count as a single subject).
Students will be given advice and support in making their decisions during Year 11 and because we know them well, our offers reflect individual needs and match students to courses that suit them. External applicants are also expected to meet the same entry requirements and we request a reference from a student’s current school with regards to likely performance at GCSE as well as skills and aptitudes in other areas of school life.
Subject Selection Advice
It is important that pupils consider the subject combinations they select very carefully to give them a balanced portfolio. Certain career paths such as Veterinary Science, Architecture and Physiotherapy require particular A Levels to be studied, so we advise all Year 11 students to use the Careers Library and ask for an interview if they need help in making their decisions.
Late applicants will be considered alongside external applicants after the submission deadline. Applicants will be interviewed by a member of the Sixth Form Interview Team between February and April.
