Kesgrave High School has now become one of the greenest schools in the country since solar panels were installed with funding from The Co-operative. The panels, worth more than £20,000 to each school, were half funded through The Co-operative's scheme with match funding from the Government's Low Carbon Building Programme. Solarcentury, the leading solar energy company, erected the panels in the last week of the spring term.
Anglia TV and the Evening Star came to KHS to see the grand 'switch on' of our solar panels as well. See the report in the star by clicking on the link below.
The rooftop solar panels on the Technology building will generate renewable electricity which will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels while highlighting the issue of climate change. A monitor screen in the entrance area of the Technology building will display how much energy the panels are generating and how much carbon dioxide we have saved to date. We will also be able to access our energy data on the Internet, along with educational materials which teachers can download for use in the classroom.
As well as reducing the school's carbon footprint and cutting its electricity bill by generating renewable energy, the rooftop solar panels will serve as a prominent reminder to the whole community of the urgent need to tackle climate change. It is fantastic to be among the 100 schools chosen to receive free solar panels through this generous Co-operative initiative.
Schools have a vital role to play in educating the next generation about climate change and using this renewable energy technology to power our own premises will really help us to bring that message home to pupils, parents and staff.
