WELCOME TO YOUR FUTURE

This page gives you access to loads of information about the careers work done in school, and careers generally. If you ever need any advice, information or guidance, an application form for College or just want to look at careers information in general, come and see me! I'm based in the Careers Library which is on the ground floor of the 6th Form block. I'm here every day, including break and lunchtimes and am happy to help.

Careers Entitlement

All students will...
  • receive a planned programme of Careers Education as an integral part of their Personal & Social Education programme.
  • have access to the Careers Library and will receive guidance on how to access information from year 9 onwards.
  • have access to computer based careers information and training on its retrieval.
  • have the opportunity to take part in Take Our Sons/Daughters To Work day in year 9.
  • take part in 'A Day in the World of Work'in year 9.
  • take part in a two week block placement of Work Experience in the summer term of Year 10.
  • be given the information to receive information and guidance from the Connexions careers service in Years 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 through individual and/or group interviews.
  • have access to a Connexions Careers Adviser at Years 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 Parents' Evenings, with parents.
  • receive information and guidance on Options Post 16.
  • be informed of job vacancies, where relevant, advertised to us by the Connexions Service in Year 11, 12 & 13.

Careers Library

Helping students make decisions about their future, the Careers Library is a multi media research environment! We have several software programmes to help students find out more about further education, higher education, employment, and training opportunities:

  • KUDOS - Let the computer help you decide what kind of a person you are, what your special interests are, and what sort of career you would be suited to.
  • CAREERSCAPE - answers every question you ever had about jobs, education, opportunities, funding, sponsorship, etc.
  • KEYCLIPS - If you know what career you want to pursue, this is the programme for you. Type in a job name and let the computer do the work - everything you need to know about qualifications, training, personal qualities, etc.

Resources

The following alternative resources are also available in the Careers Library:

  • VIDEOS / DVDs - these can either be viewed in the Interview Room, or taken home on a short-term loan. We have many titles ranging from Animal Care to IT, the Armed Forces to the Travel Industry.
  • REFERENCE BOOKS - a wide range of reference books about employment, higher and further education, choosing GCSEs, A Levels, and many, many more. We also have Prospectuses for each of the Universities and Colleges in the UK.

We help students to...

  • research their ideas.
  • identify their aims, learn to set targets and plan their future.
  • complete any application forms for Sixth Form and College places.
  • find employment and training opportunities if they do not wish to continue academic education.
  • learn how to use computer software to identify strengths and weaknesses.
  • learn how to research the reference material to identify the best opportunities for their future.
  • put them in direct contact with the agencies who can help them in their next steps.

Careers Work From Year 9

We begin careers education in Year 9 with a Careers Carousel which offers students sessions on using the Careers Library, using the software available to them and choosing their subjects for GCSE. They also take part in a Day in the World of Work lots of work related activities hosted by local employers and Take our Sons/Daughters to Work.

Careers Calendar

There are many events throughout the year. Below, a timetable for a year in careers gives general guidance on what to expect and when

  • September - Year 10 parents Careers and Work Experience presentation evening.
  • September / October - Year 11 students have weekly PSE sessions focusing on Kesgrave Records of Achievement, post-16 options and decision making. Careers guidance interviews begin for Year 11 students. Sessions on writing letters of application are run during PSE for Year 10 students.
  • January - Work Experience placements are advertised for Year 10 students. Careers Carousel begins for Year 9 students, introducing them to Careers Education and opportunities.
  • February - Allocation of Work Experience placements for Year 10. Year 11 students apply to Sixth Forms and Colleges, if appropriate. Year 10 have sessions on preparing for interviews during PSE.
  • March - Work Experience Mock Interviews for Year 10. Parents and employers advised of Work Experience placements.
  • April - 'Take Your Son/Daughter to Work' day for Year 9.
  • May - Year 10 students attend Work Experience interviews and meetings. Preparation for Work Experience begins in PSE lessons. 'Day in the World of Work' for the whole of Year 9 students - employment situations recreated in school.
  • June - Year 11 students take GCSEs.
  • July - Work Experience fortnight. Students are visited at their placements. A debriefing meeting takes place on their return to school during the last few days of the Summer Term.
  • August - Year 11, 12 and 13 students receive their GCSE/A Level results and make final plans for their next stage of education, training or employment.
