What happens when our students leave Yr11?
"It is one of our prime responsibilities both in our teaching and in our guidance work, to prepare students for the variety of opportunities beyond the school gates."
In a school where approximately 70% continue their academic studies to 'A' level, it is especially important that we present a broad and flexible careers picture. It is good to report that with the new Sixth Form, pupils are able to continue their education at Kesgrave until they are 18 . Our specific education in this area begins in Year 9. In this year, pupils are faced with the important issue of choosing subjects of study in Years 10 and 11. This inevitably involves some specialisation where particular directions are being pursued, but care has to be taken to ensure that a sufficiently balanced curriculum is chosen. The 9th Year Parents Evening is obviously, a vital occasion for the pupils' future.
During Year 10, pupils complete a series of questionnaires and self-assessment exercises which help to build up an individual profile. This period of self-analysis is necessary as wise choices can only be made, based on the firm foundation of self-knowledge.
The National Record of Achievement is completed in Year 11 with all students having an individual interview in the Autumn term with their form tutor. From Year 9 onwards, all pupils have the opportunity to be interviewed by a Connexions Careers Advisor and many students have more than one interview.
The basis of successful careers work in schools is the pooling of knowledge about individuals, local employment and further education opportunities. Other, more general careers work undertaken, includes Year 9 Day in the World of Work, Year 10 Work Experience, local exhibitions, visiting speakers, visits to industry, residential courses, visits to Universities etc.
